The Brain Injury Alliance of Iowa will host the 21st Annual Best Practices in Brain Injury Service Conference: “From Research to Reality”.
Time and Date: Beginning on Thursday, March 7, 2013 at 8:30am(CT) and ending on Friday, March 8, 2013 at 3:45pm(CT).

Overview: Current Brain Injury Medicine and Rehabilitation practices are based on a rational understanding of the neurobiology and pathoanatomy of different types and severity of injury with characteristic recovery patterns. Additionally, recent insights into the biologic mechanisms which lead to neuroplasticity are exciting opportunities for research and meaningful clinical interventions. This lecture will highlight recent advances in the neurodiagnosis of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) as a basis for novel rationale innovative, acute care and dynamic rehabilitation therapies. Recent advances in disability intervention including common medical problems such as seizures, spasticity, movement disorders and communicative, cognitive and behavioral disorders will also be reviewed. Chronic neurologic rehabilitation interventions such as hyperbaric oxygen, neural transplantation, genetic therapy and holistic approaches will be summarized. Lastly, long term quality of life issues related to aging, productive and functional relationships and family support will also be discussed.
Dr. Alan Weintraub will be the featured speaker at the conference. Dr. Weintraub has been Medical Director of the Brain Injury Program atCraigHospitalsince 1986. He also serves as the Medical Director for the Rocky Mountain Regional Brain Injury System, a federally designated Model System of Care with extensive clinical, research and dissemination activities. Over his tenure in the field of Traumatic Brain Injury Care and Rehabilitation, Dr. Weintraub has served as
Medical Director of post-acute residential brain injury programs and several long term subacute
brain injury programs. He also is an Assistant Professor at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center and an active consultant to the Colorado Division of Worker’s Compensation Medical Treatment Guidelines TBI Task Force.
